Warner’s explanation: Who are you going to believe? Me? Or your lying ears?

Mark Warner would like us to believe that his record in state politics and that of his opponent Jim Gilmore are far more important than their views on national issues, such as Warners’ panic-driven support for the bailout.

Be careful what you wish for, Mark.

My buddy Tim Watson (I’m Surrounded by Idiots, h/t BVBL) has the audio tape of Warner’s comments during a 1994 speech he gave as Chairman of the Virginia Democrats.  It’s an ugly slam against “home schoolers” and “right-to-lifers” that reminds us all of just how intolerant elite Democrats were during the Clinton era.

Even worse, when it came up in the 2001 gubernatorial campaign, Warner insisted he said no such things (Bearing Drift).  Oops.

This will cause some fun in the blogosphere and at the very least a major hiccup for Warner, but it’s emblematic of a larger issue with Marky Mark.  The Dem nominee is the poster-boy for the “limousine liberal” (as Bob Novak calls them), wealthy politicos who vote for the Democrats on social or foreign policy issues, but mainly driven by an elitist snobbery that has no use for ordinary Virginians or what they think.

Until this year, “limousine liberals” did most of their policy damage on cultural or security issues, but the events of the past month have revealed something new: their elitism has become part and parcel of the herd mentality at the top that led to mass hysteria over the financial markets.

The Mark Warner of 1994 was an out-of-touch elitist who was slamming ordinary Virginia voters in partisan speeches.  The Mark Warner of 2008 is still out of touch, but he is now part of an elite gone mad on financial issues.

Will the Mark Warner of 2009 be in a position where his weakness for hysteria can do real damage?  Or will Virginians recognize the danger in time go with the safer pair of hands – namely Jim Gilmore’s?
