Down goes the bailout (UPDATED)

Leslie Carbone had the vote at 228-205 (so does the BBC). CNN had it at 227-206. now they agree with the others: 228-205. Either way, the bailout was defeated.

The windmill actually fell.

Wow.

UPDATE: The House roll call vote provides an additional stunner: Rob Wittman voted against it.  For the first time since Jo Ann Davis died, I am actually proud of my Member of Congress.

  7. Here’s why Wittman did a flip-flop:

This week, about 1,100 people have telephoned the office of Democratic Sen. Jim Webb about the proposed federal bailout of the U.S. financial sector. Only about 100 of them think it’s a good idea.

“That’s on top of about 6,500 e-mails we’ve gotten this week, and the breakout is roughly the same,” said spokeswoman Jessica Smith. “By and large, people are not thrilled with the idea that we’re going to bail out Wall Street.”

The situation is no different for Republicans Reps. Rob Wittman of Westmoreland County, J. Randy Forbes of Chesapeake and Thelma Drake of Norfolk.

    [...]

“The phones have been ringing off the hook,” said Wittman spokesman Steve Stampley. “People are angry and opposed to this sort of bailout 10-to-one.”
