Palin Derangement Syndrome Watch: Daily Kos and CNN

The latest attempt to smear Governor Palin comes from Night Runner at Daily Kos (with an assist from CNN’s Soledad O’Brien, according to Brian Faughnan of the Weekly Standard Blog (I don’t watch CNN much these days).

To hear NR@DK and O’Brien tell it, Palin “cut the Special Education (Budget) by 62%.”  Here’s the justification DK uses for this smear:

For those of you who seem so enamored with Gov. Sarah Palin, it might be worth noting that she oversees the budget for the Department of Education and Early Development Special Schools in Alaska.

These funds provide supplementary educational services to students with severe disabling conditions and the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy. The resident school where the child would normally be placed does not have the resources to provide an adequate educational program. Without the supplementary services the child’s needs would not be met by the local school district in most cases.

The following programs are included within this component: Special Education Service Agency (SESA)

The Annual budget for 2007, which preceded Gov. Palin was $8,265,300.

   http://www.gov.state.ak.us/… (RWL note: Broken link)

The Annual budget for 2008, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/… (RWL note: Broken link again)

The Annual budget for 2009, enacted by Gov. Palin is $3,156,000.

http://www.gov.state.ak.us/… (RWL note: Broken link again again)

This is a cut in special needs services to children in Alaska of 5,109,300 , or 62%.

Now, Faughnan does a pretty decent job responding to this crap, but because I saw the per student funding level and skipped the words “per student,” I initially thought Palin would need a better defense (sorry, Brian).  So I did a little more digging, and I found that Night Runner is an idiot, and O’Brien (for lapping this up) is lazy and unprofessional.

I started with the FY07 budget for Special Schools (that was Murkowski’s last budget year). Indeed, Special Schools received $8,265,300.  Now, one thing to keep in mind: this budget included the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy, which NR@DK referenced earlier.

Next up is the FY08 operating budget, and indeed, it only shows $3,156,000.  Here’s the part DK and O’B forgot to mention: the Alaska Challenge Youth Academy is a separate line item in the operating budget – to the tune of $5,709,000.  The funds total $8,865,000, an 7.26% increase, not a 62% cut.

The FY09 Operating Budget has the same separation.  Add them together again, and you have $9,214,900, 3.95% more than FY08 and 11.49% more than FY07.  Again, not a 62% cut.

This is something the NR@DK could have easily checked just by looking at the Alaska State Budget website and making a few clicks.  Ms. O’Brien could have also checked this out in less than an hour if she had bothered to actually work at her craft rather than ball up bad numbers from Daily Kos and fling them with glee on unsuspecting campaign officials.

So, what we have learned?  That Governor Palin did not cut special needs education funding, that DK still spews out sludge, that CNN has joined MSNBC (and many others) in sinking to the nut-roots’ level.

Ok, now I get the email. DailyKos is an embarrassment to liberals everywhere. Great job on tracking this down.

I’ll be posting an excerpt later with attribution and link to you.

Wow, I am so beyond being disgusted and embarrassed to have ever called myself a Democrat. At least I left the party and have my self respect back. Good luck finding yours, liberal media. You suck. This reminds me of the canard leveled against Palin a few days ago how she cut funding to Covenant House in AK, when a miniscule amount of searching would have proven she cut PROPOSED funding from $5 million, to $3.9 million, which was still a 300% increase from the year before.
I feel great about voting for McCain/Palin. Can’t call myself a PUMA anymore since I decided after the way Hillary’s delegates weren’t even accorded the courtesy of a floor vote at the convention that I’d rather be a Republican. Make no mistake, I’ll be watching my new party carefully, but it’s hard to see, at this point in time, how they could POSSIBLY disappoint me more than the Democrats have.

  3. Judy R Says:

Very good job of routing out the truth! I can’t get over how anxious people are to put Palin in her place. It seems like desperation to get a “scoop” on a new public personna but that’s no reason to throw core journalistic integrity out the window!

  4. Texas Hill Country Says:

thanks for this… i am going to post an xlink to this on my blog.

I went after another bs spin meme about how “Palin cut funding to teen moms” that is much like this one…

check it out and let me know what you think!

I stumbled across that nonsense mysefl yesterday.

    Nicely Done.

I ow you many thanks, THC. Without you linking to one of my posts waaaaay back when, I might never have stumbled across the PUMA bloggers.

You made the blogosphere a richer experience for me.

Congrats! You just won you the worst argument ever award. The Alaska Challenge Youth Academy has nothing to do with special needs and any intelligent person who knows how to search a document for the words can instantly discover the lengths of BS you are willing to print just so your world view isn’t challenged.

According to the State of Alaska: “This instructional program is operated in Anchorage with student enrollees from across the state. Students work on challenging academic programs in a “boot camp” environment. Completing high school and building career goal and skills are the goals. AS 14.30.740 $6,082.0 at BSA $5,380 http://www.gov.state.ak.us/omb/09_omb/budget/EED/comp2837.pdf

This is just the best illustration ever of the way you boys are willing to make up any crap that fits your argument while arrogantly assuming that the readers are too dumb or lazy to actually look at the 90-page documents you use to “prove” your point. Please try not to insult your readers by lying to them, thanks.

  9. rightwingliberal Says:

Well, phil, if the ACYA “has nothing to do with special needs,” then why did Daily Kos include its funding in the FY07numbers for comparison.

Face it, phil, the DK diarist fouled up; he used the wrong numbers and got caught. You can’t handle that, so you’ve changed the subject.

  10. Gunner Sykes Says:

This charge is based on looking at the budget for Alaska’s Special Education Service Agency for 2007-2009. In fact, the December 2006 budget document that they cite would have been prepared by the outgoing administration — that of Republican Frank Murkowski, whom Palin defeated.

  11. rightwingliberal Says:

I saw that (Faughnam on WS had the same thing), but it doesn’t address the numbers issue (which I did).

  12. MJC Says:

I am a conservative christian Republican, who is on the fence about Sarah Palin. I really need to know a whole lot more about her berfore I an make an informed vote.

Actually, if you look at all the figures for each of those years, the budget for special needs, SPECIFICALLY for severly disabled children, it is a mere $2,054.00 for the entire year. It has not decreased or increased at all from 2007 to 2009.

That doesn’t seem like much money at all to help the disabled kids for the entire year. That’s just a token amount. It probably just covers snacks or something irrelevant like that. So, exactly how is she helping disabled special needs kids? Why hasn’t she increased the funding?

She made a very strong statement saying that she is a strong supporter for special needs children now that she has one of her own, as well her sister, but a mere $2054.00 towards that budget from year to year does not prove to me that she is a strong advocate of special needs children.

Perhaps she will increase the Alaska’s 2010 budget for special needs disabled children now that she has a special needs child of her own. It sounds like she is mor reactive than proactive.

  13. rightwingliberal Says:

    MJC,

It appears you don’t know how to read a budget either. That money is in thousands. We’re talking $2.05M here.

    Try again, “conservative Christian Republican.”

  14. MJC Says:

    rightwingliberl,

I’ll talk a look at it again. Why do I detect that you are trying to insult me for being a “christian”? Do you have a problem with christians?

  15. rightwingliberal Says:

I have a problem with people who lie about who they are, which I thought you were doing. Your comment looked like one of those cover stories some libs use to eat into the base. Apologies for the error.

  16. MJC Says:

No problem… it just sounded like you were questioning my faith because I stated that I was undecided as to who I would vote for. I have run across a few christians who will judge me and say that I can’t possibly be a christian if I don’t vote for John McCain.

P.S. My error on the previous post. The budget covers more than just snacks. :)

  17. Texas Hill Country Says:

    Hey MJC,

We get told we cant be Democrats if we dont vote for Obama… so I know how you feel!!! LOL

And RWL… my pleasure. Keep fighting the good fight. We may not agree on everything, but I always respect honesty and forthrightness.

  18. Kenosha1946 Says:

My daughter-in-law complained about Palin to me, said her new mom blog was against Palin because Palin cut spec. ed spending. I said, “Oh?, say, I can research it and get back to you”. So began a rather easy search which led to your site and the article above. So I gave her the URL above and a quick note to the mom blog telling them the TRUTH!! All your excellent research made an impression on me. See next post.

  19. Kenosha1946 Says:

Then began my HuffingtonPost saga. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/adrienne-williams/palin-gutted-special-ed-f_b_123774.html Adrienne Williams did a piece called, “Palin Slashed ‘Special Schools’ Funding in Alaska”

Two commenters, “knicknack” and “GH” commented with what looked like very clear responses. I noticed the diggs were around 130 or so. I thought about responding and fired off a response to GH, which went to “pending approval”. OK. I noticed the diggs had gone up to 200+. So I began firing off commentary, all very factual, all using language such as you see me using here. Perhaps a big of sarcasm, but nothing defamatory.

You can read my posts as “Clairemont”. So over the next day I must have piled up at least 3 or 4 “deletions” and it became a game to see what would stick. I wrote one with your article and put in the URL. Deleted. So I went back and put in just your article, you can see it, with quotes around it. I meant to add the URL but decided I would add it to a 2nd post underneath after seeing if just the article would stick. It stuck. But I tried again last night to acknowledge the source with your URL and it GOT DELETED!!! I’m so pissed. Please next post. Hope I’m not a pain.

  20. Kenosha1946 Says:

For my first money, I have a total of 13 huffpost deletions of which probably 8 are for this Adrienne Williams article.

Notice that Adrienne Williams showed up 03:35 AM on 09/06/2008 and posted a comment to the one and only commenter “miriamsong” that appreciated her article.

Miriamsong: The budget figures are shown in the thouands, so multiply everything in the Williams article by 1000. That means $5 million dollars in cuts to special ed. And these are figures from Palin’s budget, not her predecessor. So GH raises a red herring. For more on the Obama policy on disability, visit http://www.barackobama.com/issues/disabilities/

NOTE: GH’s “red herring” So these practiced huff bloggers do know the lying language. Yeah, Adrienne, like you wouldn’t know a red herring when you saw one.

    Here’s Adrienne’s response:
Adrienne Williams: Thanks miriamsong for the link, I haven’t seen this video…. Just so everyone know (sic) — I’m a huge advocate for Children who are deaf…working in the past in a deaf school, I know what services of this kind means to them.”

NOTE: Well, she needs to go back to school and learn how to listen to the truth.

So, here’s your next task. Watch the video and see what gives.

And thank you for the link. I’m going to try once more to credit your article. And then maybe we could talk about a lawsuit for plagiarism where you sue me and I would have to subpoena huffpost to get the evidence and make this a bigger issue in the courts. Even Adrienne Williams could be subpoened. Wish I had money. Arianna has deep pockets, doesn’t she?

  21. Kenosha1946 Says:

“For my first money” should read “For my first MONTH” on huffingtonpost I was typing the last sentence, then went up to proofread, so still had money on my mind.

I do hope to hear from you. I love your site. God, there’s awful stuff going on out there. I am so driven to put my finger in the dyke of the wave of leftism surging into this country.

  22. yowsers Says:

    OK.

So – is there a way to tell how much changed for actual special needs services?

Since the 2007 budget first included the Alaska Youth Challenge boot camp for high school & career training (not for special needs kids for those who see special needs kids as behavior problems) – can we really tell how much changed?

Because, it wouldn’t make sense to just add them back together – which is probably why they got separated….anyone? Cause, unless you can break down the first number…looks to me like you can’t tell what went where. And that boot camp is not for special needs kids (that’d be horrible!).

  23. ImpressedByHonesty Says:

The story about decreasing the special needs funding was unfair. And I fell for it too. But there are so many stories about Palen that counter good character. That is what is so troubling.

Defend her at all costs. Even if it means putting blinders on to the cumulative idea that she is just another young George Bush with all of the secrecy and the big masquerades. (McCain too.) Look at the massive effort to cover and discredit this Troopergate thing. Talk about airlift… Maybe you want that type of leadership. This poster does not.

  24. rightwingliberal Says:

    IBH,

I’m guessing as more information on “Troopergate” comes out, you’ll be lamenting you “fell for” that also.
