The following predictions are based on numerous factors. Some are already hackneyed; a few have been surprisingly ignore; and of course, all of them are probably wrong. Anyhow, here goes.
For the Democrats – Mark Warner: I know, I know, he took himself out of the running, but I’ve never believed him on that. What matters here is that Warner is the most popular Democrat – by far - in a state that went from a luxury for Obama in June to a near-necessity for him now. Moreover, lest anyone forget, Warner can run for Vice President and Senator at the same time, so contrary to conventional wisdom, he will give up nothing by agreeing to be Barack’s running mate. Finally, with all the speculation centered around Warner’s successor (and poor political substitute), the Warner pick will include the surprise needed to give the Dems the spark that Obama needs them to have going into the convention.
As for the problem of Warner already being the keynote speaker, forget it. That can be rearranged in a heartbeat (no pun intended).
For the Republicans – Tom Coburn: On some level, this is still based more on hope than analysis, but Coburn came through for McCain at just the right time – right after Romney’s upset win in Michigan. The Coburn endorsement gave McCain right-wing gravitas in South Carolina that he just didn’t have in 2000. Without it, there’s a good change Huckabee wins South Carolina and this campaign goes down a very different path. Moreover, Coburn is not just a down-the-line conservative; his battles against government spending have even given members of his own party fits – just the kind of thing to which McCain is drawn.
Anyway, that’s how I see it.

Let it be Biden, let it be Biden.
That guy never knows when to shut his mouth and would provide a continuous gag reel during the campaign.
Compared to some of the other choices out there, Mark Warner and Tim Kaine are absolutely statesmanlike.

How about Eric Cantor?? Cantor would be an excellent pick for McCain. He’s young, charismatic, a solid social and fiscal conservative and is from a supposed battleground state. However, if McCain picks Coburn, then I would be all for this as well. Who has a more conservative record than Coburn? No one.
As for the Democrats, Obama has a surprise up his sleeve. His surprise is Tim Kaine, which would be a godsend for the Republican party. However, Joe Biden would be a hidden blessing for all the points that Timothy Watson makes in the comment above.

I’d die and go to Heaven (well, not just yet) if Coburn was picked, but I think you’ve likely fallen and struck your head on a sharp rock if you really, truly, believe this.

From your lips to God’s ears. For me picking Warner is like picking Kaine. It is waving the red cape in front of the Republican bull. Picking either of them would goose Republican turnout big time. Especially if Gilmore continues to pound home the message about Warner fudging the numbers to foist an unnecessary tax increase on the state.

Biden would be a good pick for Obama, as he would draw all the attention with his gaffes and make Obama look statesman like. You don’t want to be out shown by your VP.

How bad will Gilmore lose if it is Warner. Right now Warner has 30-40% over Gilmore. I bet that lead would grow if he gets the vp spot. Hopefully we have seen the last of Gilmore in Va. If only we would have picked Marshall. At least he could have made this race close.
