The Democratic Party of Virginia has had not one, not two, but three chances in less than a year to put up a decent candidate against Congressman Rob Wittman, a Republican who has serious trouble with his party base. Even the DPVA should be smart enough to notice the opportunity for a low-tax Democrat (like, say Johnny Joannou, although he’s in the wrong district) to pull off a surprise upset – or at the very least make the GOP sweat a little.
Yet with the selection of Bill Day (the fellow who was waxed by Delegate Scott Lingamfelter last year – Riley at VV) as their standard bearer, 1st District Democrats are now 0 for 3.
Greg L over at Black Velvet Bruce Li has the details on this clown (emphasis in original):
Bill Day, the very candidate calling for us to subsidize Mexico’s economy and eliminate the US Border Patrol . . . asked Lingamfelter why he voted in 2005 against providing life insurance to combat soldiers to help support their families . . . It turns out that Day was referring to a budget amendment that Lingamfelter actually voted for in the 2005 “veto session.”
. . .
It was also divulged during Wednesday evening’s debate that Day, who touts himself as a businessman of 40 years and a licensed counselor in Warrenton is… well… neither. His business license with the town of Warrenton and his license to practice as a counselor through the Commonwealth of VA are both expired. Also, the State Corporation Commission has no record of his two business partnerships that he cites on his Statement of Economic Interest filed with the Clerk of the House of Delegates.
Lingamfelter, who serves as co-chair of the Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus, also pressed Day on why his campaign literature advertises him as an “avid hunter,” yet the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries has no record of him holding a hunting license in the last 18 months. Day responded that he doesn’t need one because he is a fox hunter… unfortunately for Mr. Day, the Virginia code requires a license for this activity, cited in section 29.1-300 and 29.1-335 of the Virginia State Code. Looks like you can add to the Day resume: quack, spurious businessman, and poacher.
This is the best the Democrats can do? Wittman remains the luckiest Virginia politician alive.
