As I was taking the train home, the Senate passed the monstrosity that is SB6009S1, which as I noted earlier includes not only the well-publicized gas and grantor’s tax hikes, but also hidden regional sales tax hikes (Shad Plank; h/t Tim Watson, who first mentioned it in the comments of my previous post).
The vote as 21-16; Harry Blevins, Fred Quayle, and Frank Ruff did not vote (were they absent today?); every other Republican voted no. All Democrats voted yes.
So this outrage now slithers over to the House, where, lest we forget, according to Garren Shipley, “there might be 51 votes for some kind of gas tax hike, depending on the fine details of the proposal.”
Be afraid; be very afraid.

I am just catching up because I was in North Carolina/helping my sister out of her house the last five days. Thanks for the updates and the breakdown of what the Senate passed. I would say its incredibly brazen to try and sneak through a second tax increase this way, but it is right there in black and white. Even Bill Howell can’t go along with this, two tax increases for the price of one plus a ridiculous unelected Transportation Board. Howell only wants one tax increase and a ridiculous unlected Transportation Board.
