From the Washington Post blog this morning:
Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-Colo.), an outspoken conservative and fierce advocate for additional controls on illegal immigration, announced today he is supporting Del. Robert G. Marshall’s candidacy for U.S. Senate.
Tancredo’s endorsement could boost Marshall (R-Prince William) among conservatives as he battles former governor James S. Gilmore III for the GOP nomination. About 10,000 Republican activists will elect the nominee at the state party convention next weekend.
“We can trust Bob Marshall to oppose amnesty for illegal aliens. In the House of Delegates, Bob has a strong record of doing what he could on the state level to stop illegal immigration,” Tancredo said in a statement.
. . .
Tancredo and Gilmore were both briefly candidates for the GOP nomination for president. In endorsing Marshall, Tancredo took a shot at his former rival from the presidential race, accusing Gilmore of supporting “amnesty” for illegal immigrants.
“Jim Gilmore says he’s against amnesty, but he has a long record that suggests otherwise,” Tancredo said. “Less than a year ago, while campaigning for the presidency in Iowa, I witnessed Gilmore give a speech supporting a policy that sounded like amnesty to me.”
Now, even I’ll admit that Tancredo has eaten his foot on occasion, but he is a principled man, and of the most experienced politicians on the illegal alien issue. His words mean something. Amnesty opponents should heed them.

This is a nice gesture on Tom Tancredo’s part.
Too many Virginia Republicans claim to have already made up their minds, so I don’t see his endorsement at this late date swaying any votes.
It doesn’t seem to register in the graying old minds of the majority of the Republican Party that most People really hate President Bush now and they see men like Gilmore as joined at the hip with Bush and his Neocon cronies who trashed our Constitution and set our Nation on the path to fascism.
Indeed, several of the blue haired old ladies who make up a substantial part of our Convention goers have opined that they think torture and National ID cards are necessary and that they trust Bush. They don’t realize that they are alone as the remaining 12% who still support the Bush Neocon agenda.
This is the key problem with the Convention nomination method. It gives these frightened, blue-haired old ladies too much sway over who is nominated. The blue hairs are OK with domestic spying, with Bush monitoring computer traffic and with his goons torturing people whom they deem to be “with the terrorists.” However, the general population roundly rejects Bush and guys like Gilmore who still blindly support the Neocon agenda.
Only if there is an epiphany amongst the Convention delegates and they suddenly realize that our Republican Party can again be the Party with the vision for a prosperous future; where we can lead this nation to become that “Shining City on the Hill” that is the example for all others to follow; only then will we see the Virginia Convention show the collective wisdom to nominate Bob Marshall.
