McCain Derangement Syndrome hits the Virginia blogosphere

A couple of days after Rush Limbaugh succumbed to the disease, Spank That Donkey has also fallen ill (emphasis added):

McCain has a proven track record of compromising our Conservative values, and that is the reason why the MSM is so intent upon promoting his candidacy.  Think about it, they are salivating for a Hillary McCain match up, because either way the liberals win with the combination.  If liberal policies are to be forced upon this nation, let it be by the hands of a Democratic President.

Now, I know of a lot of people who are thinking about sitting this election out, and I hope to address them in several later posts, but openly calling for a Democratic victory?

I guess ”Spank That Donkey” was just a weird personal ad. Who knew?

Seriously, leave aside the ridiculous notion that McCain and Clinton or Obama are peas in a pod (I addressed that nonsense here and here); the important point is that STD has joined the ignominious group best described by Michael Goldfarb (emphasis added): “Apparently they’d rather lose the war than see John McCain win this election.”

This is beyond ridiculous. It reminds me of the LCRC Chairman saying to the local media that “we might lose, but at least we’ll be pure” before the LCRC supervisors were largely demolished last year. 80-20 rule, people! McCain is nowhere near as “liberal” as so many paint him to be.

Well, and the thing is - it’s been mentioned this week around the blogosphere, so it’s not MY idea - there are still the congressional races. I may dislike McCain, I may eventually decide that I cannot vote for him (likely), but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stand aside and let the Dems win more seats in Congress!!

This sort of overreaction, without any balance reminds me too much of, oh, the Daily Kos… MoveOn.org… Code Pink… You know, the REAL lunatics! ;-)

As for me, I cannot support McCain in a primary–simply cannot. But that is the reason for primaries after all. Unfortunately, it seems my vote will be a “message” vote reading, “Look, John, you are not loved by the conservatives (economic and social) and you will have to WORK, WORK, WORK very hard to convince us that you are worthy of our support.”
I still worry, though, that we will go into November with a candidate that we are not excited to vote for and will rely on the “against” vote. Republicans have a DISMAL record when we are faced with a situation where we are voting against someone (Clinton or Obama) versus when we are voting for someone.
I see a replay of the Dole campaign (it’s the old man’s turn) and maybe a replay of Ford ‘76 or Bush ‘92–I pray fervently that I am wrong.

Does your neck still hurt in your lurch from a true Conservative Duncan Hunter to our biggest RINO John McCain?

If he becomes our nominee, I won’t be leaving the Party, but if his C+ NRA rating, and his open borders policy makes the GOP indistinguishable from the Democrats… are you still going to be throwing around bomb posts like this?

You may just end up having these posts thrown back in your face… Now tell me, you really trust John McCain, or is he just the ’strong horse’ you want to hitch a ride with?

    STD,

First off, I don’t consider McCain a RINO. From my perspective, Huckabee fits that label far better.

I’ll admit, the journey from Hunter to McCain is best described by the old saying; “What a long, strange trip it’s been.” In sum, though, I decided on McCain because he was better on foreign policy that Huck, Romney, or Paul, better on social issues than Rudy, and far and away better on government spending than anyone besides Paul.

It was your post and the line I quoted that inspired this post; you have clearly moved on from it.

I don’t expect a McCain Administration to be perfect, and I’m sure I’ll be frustrated by a bunch of things - but it would be far fewer things than with Obama, Clinton, or even Huckabee.

As strange as it sounds, it really is that straightforward.
